Rogers Park Chamber Landmark Case

The story of 7331 N. Sheridan Road continues as the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce is working closely with the community on preserving this beautiful building.

On June 5th, 2013, the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce will attend the Commission on Chicago Historic and Architectural Landmarks meeting to determine designation for the bungalow.

The Chamber of Commerce asks that if anyone is interested in preserving this building that they print and gain 8 signatures on the below PDF.

You can download and print petition .pdf here.

The petition wordage is as follows:

It is the goal of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce to have 7331 N. Sheridan Road (Shambhala Mediation Center) become a historical landmark so that the future residents of Rogers Park can admire the beautiful bungalow for many years to come. This location is where the current Mision Cristiana Elim was founded. (originally named Temple Mizpah). The owner of the home also worked hard on Marks Nathan Home for Jewish Orphans with Nicolas Pritzker, the patriarch of the Pritzker family.

We could use your help in preserving this beautiful bungalow mansion, one of the last remaining mansions of the Sheridan Road mansions! Sign below if you want to see 7331 N. Sheridan Road saved!

What is this crap? The McBuddhist Shambala franchise operation dumped this shack and moved on. It has no provenance, architectural pedigree or history behind it. Why are you wasting CoC time and money on a Foursquare tear down? Is this Tinker's new mission in life? The building isn't, never was and ain't a "mansion". It's a piece of junk.

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce is attending the Program Committee’s Commission on Chicago Landmark's meeting at 3pm on Wednesday June 5th, to present the criteria for which 7331 N. Sheridan Road meets the potential of Historical Landmark status.

Below are the criterion that are applicable to 7331 N. Sheridan Road:

Criteria 2. Significant Historic Event- According to the encyclopedic 1924 book by H.L. Meites, History of the Jews of Chicago, Temple Mizpah was actually organized in 1919 in Mr. Holsman’s home at 7331 N. Sheridan! The synagogue building on Morse was constructed in 1924 to accommodate the congregation of 350 families.

Mr. Holsman was also a director of the Marks Nathan Jewish Home for Orphans. The Marks Nathan Home opened in the Lawndale neighborhood in 1912 during the height of the immigration boom in America.

At the beginning of the twentieth century in Chicago, many poor West Side Jewish immigrants fell on hard times, or even perished, and an orphanage was needed.

Criteria 3. Significant Person- Mr.

Also according to Meites’ 1924 tome, a well-known lawyer by the name of Nicolas Pritzker was one of the founders and a longtime advocate for the Marks Nathan Home.

Criteria 6. Distinctive Theme- 7331 N. Sheridan Road is one of the few remaining mansions along Sheridan Road following a bungalow style.

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce is pushing a petition to show to the 49th Ward Alderman and the Program Committee that a large part of the community is in favor of the preservation.
